Abstract: Ambivalence is grounded in Chekhov’s story poetical structure: layers completely autonomous in the method of constructing and meaning are outlined in it. As a result of such construction the characters live simultaneously in the worlds of naturalism, impressionism and symbolism where they are doomed to failure as well as to salvation.
