Abstract: The article focuses on the genesis of the konfederatka – one of the most iconic .Polish cultural realia. The text traces the circumstances of the hat’s coming into being and outlines its semantic volume. It also includes an overview of its semiotic and historical transformations, and analyses some of its uses in the literary contexts of 20th century.
