Abstract: The paper brings up the question of multilingualism as a phenomenon typical of both the Czech literature of the 19th century and Mácha. The problem becomes particularly important in the frame of the revival ideology and its typical national myths. The metaphor of the ghost is discussed not within Mácha’s imagery world where it appears very often, but as a sign of both his dramatic relationships with the surrounding context and the character and fate of the Czech literature of that time
