Abstract: The article examines the popular notions of the snake in Bulgarian and Slovak culture – it is the patron saint of home and guardian of treasures, it can heal and kill, do good and evil. Their interpretations in different genres of verbal folklore and their reflection are traced in the lexical fund of the modern Bulgarian and Slovak language. The attention is focused on words and expressions with the component of snake, which arises as a result of the secondary nomination.
