Abstract: The title of this paper contains a question (to whom do we owe Polish literary language) that the author answers the following way: to the Church. This is due to two factors: 1) Polish language norm (what literary language really is), developed in medi- eval texts at the highest literary level (translations of the Psalms and the whole Bible, the prayers, sermons, religious songs, etc.); 2) texts written by clergymen, who were accomplishing by these texts the evangelizing and cultural mission of the Church.
