Abstract: The paper studies the works of Jan Skácel and in particular the problem of silence and sound, which are found very often in his poetry. Silence and sound are loaded with various symbolic meanings in Skácel’s poems. They can express the power of nature, past, childhood, death and life. In most of his verses the silence and sound become philo- sophical concepts, a philosophy of human existence. The works of the Czech poet present a new and unique approach to the perception of the outside world, politics and poetry
