Abstract: The article examines how the concept of “abyss” functions in the A. N. Ostrovsky’s and Branislav Nušić’s plays of the same name. The interpretation takes into account the role of the literary and social context in Russia and Serbia from the second half of the 19th century. It traces the connection between the semantic development of the concept in the works and the influence of the “new European drama” on the poetics of the two authors.
