Abstract: The text interprets the first (professional) meeting of Roman Jakobson and Vilem Mathesius as a correlation between ideas of linguistics and sociology. The basis of comparison is their attitude towards literary history. Young Jakobson agrees with Saussur’s idea of synchronic linguistics being dominant to the diachronic one in order for the new linguistics and poetics to emerge. Vilem Mathesius is rethinking traditional methodology of literary history by considering statics and dynamics complementary sociological methods used when studying contemporary languages and looking for new methodology of literary history. Both of these opinions are successfully acknowledged in the works of the future Prague Linguistic Circle.
